In David Lynch’s unsettling tale of suburbia, an investigation is launched after a young man discovers a severed human ear in a vacant field. With an all-star cast including Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, and a memorable Dennis Hopper. BLUE VELVET pries open an alternate reality of dread and evil that lurks just beneath the surface of everyday life. Lynch’s warping of the cinematic convention is a big reason why this film has stood the test of time. Rated R.
About the Fashion: Filmmaker David Lynch honed his cinematic style with the help of costumer designer Patricia Norris on BLUE VELVET. Even though the film was released in 1986, the look and feel of this film evokes a timelessness of apple pie Americana and the dark underbelly that lives beneath its surface. The dangerous nighttime glamor and ‘40's aesthetic of Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper’s characters contrasts starkly with the wholesome ‘50s style worn by the young lovebirds, played by Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern. The clothes in this film spell out the dark and light and how one can’t exist without the other. It's a testament to this film that the iconic visage of Isabella Rossellini’s blue velvet floor length gown, red lipstick, and big hair has been referenced by musical artist Lana Del Ray and was an influence for Louis Vuitton’s 2015 summer collection. Four years after the film’s release, Lynch would go on to fashion similar styles for his characters in the highly popular TV series, TWIN PEAKS.
